Urban litter bins play a key role in maintaining cleanliness and the image of our city. They are designed exclusively for “small waste items”, such as water bottles or dog‑waste bags. Milan has one of the highest concentrations of these bins in Europe, with 1.7 units per 100 inhabitants.
In recent years, however, these bins have increasingly been used for improper use. A recent waste‑composition analysis revealed that about 65% of the waste found in urban litter bins originates from household and commercial activities, while only 35% is actual street waste.
To promote a proper use of urban litter bins among residents, tourists, and city users, Amsa has launched an innovative awareness campaign scheduled for March 2025. The initiative features the installation of a 7‑meter‑tall giant litter bin in three high‑traffic squares in Milan. Visitors will be able to literally look inside and gain a clearer understanding of the issue. A video inside the structure explains what can and cannot be disposed of in urban litter bins, offering a new and engaging way to raise awareness.
The installation will be located in three squares chosen for their significant pedestrian traffic. After Piazza XXV Aprile, the giant litter bin will be placed in Piazza Leonardo da Vinci from March 7 to 13, and then in Piazzale Cordusio from March 25 to 29.
The community of students and citizens living in the Città Studi district can actively contribute to urban cleanliness and the image of this area of the city by paying attention to this aspect as well.
We would like to take this opportunity to remind you that – also considering the active agreement between the Politecnico di Milano and Amsa for the separate collection of batteries and WEEE – it is essential to support proper waste disposal through personal commitment.
Let\’s make sure to dispose of this special waste in the designated bins across the Politecnico Campuses in Milan, rather than in urban litter bins: #MettiamocilaTesta!
