The “Technical Standards for Industrial Symbiosis” handbook has recently been published.
The document was developed within the SUN-Symbiosis Users Network and promoted by ENEA to start a discussion on industrial symbiosis and promote its widespread and systematic application across the national territory.
Since 2017, the Network has brought together contributions from about 40 organizations from the fields of research, business, public administration, and civil society. Among these organizations Politecnico di Milano, has coordinated, together with ENEA and CNR, the “Certifications and standards for industrial symbiosis” Working Group, that drafted the guide.
In particular, Eleonora Perotto, Head of the Environmental Sustainability Unit, has overseen the projects since the beginning, with contributions over the years from Andrea Betteo, Christan Buurstee, and Chiara Minerva, all members of the Environmental Sustainability Unit.
The handbook “The Technical Standards for Industrial Symbiosis” was previewed in Rimini during the 2024 Ecomondo edition (see here). The volume provides a broad and organic overview of the existing standards to support organizations that are either implementing or already practicing industrial symbiosis. Technical standards provide common and shared technical references, serving as an important tool for organizations implementing business models such as industrial symbiosis. Standards can also serve as a channel for technology transfer and diffusion of innovation, and are increasingly linked to the national context (e.g., the Italian strategy for the circular economy), the European context (e.g., the Green Deal), or the global context (SDGs identified by the UN 2030 Agenda).
